Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

The Context

Rio de Janeiro is well-known for its famous beaches, Carnival celebrations, sports events and natural wonders. Despite its many attractions, the city of six million people faces the hard realities of urbanization. Violent crime abounds in slum areas known as favelas. Residents lack affordable and convenient mass transit systems, difficult to manage amidst the city's mountainous terrain. And air quality worsens with the growing onslaught of pollution.

CTS-Brazil works with Rio de Janeiro and other South American cities to promote sustainable transport. Its staff specializes in the field of transport engineering, environmental science and communications. Currently, Rio is using an EMBARQ software product to simulate the operational performance of a Bus Rapid Transit corridor to be built as part of the city’s 2016 Olympics bid.
