What:
As a side event at Rio+20, EMBARQ will convene approximately 50 local and international experts for a roundtable discussion and reception. This will be an opportunity to engage with key stakeholders and communicate our engagement strategy for governments, development banks, and civil society to influence the Rio outcomes. The roundtable discussion will also address the implications of Rio+20, in particular how to bridge the gap between international discussions or agreements and the needs and capacities of local governments. We will discuss potential actions the private sector, development banks, and governments can take.
The Rio+20 UN Conference on Sustainable Development will help shape local, national and international development agendas for the coming decade. The outcomes of Rio can influence governments and multilateral development banks to prioritize sustainable development as a mechanism to alleviate poverty and advance the Millennium Development Goals. To do this, Rio+20 must emphasize the critical linkage between transportation and sustainable development. At present, much of the discussion around sustainable development, climate change, and the green economy marginalizes transportation, even though the transport sector contributes 24% of CO2 emissions and many cities are facing challenges of rapid urbanization and motorization. Sustainable transport and urban development are critical not only for meeting climate change targets, but also to advancing social equity and poverty alleviation. Promoting mass transit, walking and bicycling can improve all residents’ accessibility to jobs, education and basic services.
Through a series of activities leading up to, during and after the Rio+20 conference, EMBARQ aims to position transportation in the sustainable development agendas of governments, development banks and the private sector.
