Start Date: Tuesday, July 29, 2008
End Date: Thursday, July 31, 2008
Location: Quito, Ecuador
Traffic congestion in Quito is becoming increasingly serious, with factors such as urban sprawl, inefficient public transport, and the rapid increase in private automobiles all contributing to the problem. Reducing congestion has thus become a primary concern of the local government, as well as of the city’s residents – who are both contributors to, and victims of, this gridlock.
Quito’s struggles with traffic congestion are not unique. In fact, the issue is high on the agenda of cities across the region and throughout the developing and developed world. As a result, there exists a wide range of experiences in dealing with transportation problems that can be of great use to other cities facing similar challenges. By beginning to organize and disseminate these international experiences, this conference hopes to help guide ongoing efforts to find sustainable transportation policy alternatives in Quito, across Peru, and throughout the Andean region.
