Mayor of Mexico City Marcelo Ebrard called on an expansion of Metrobus after learning that the bus rapid transit system yielded consistently high ratings in a recent user satisfaction survey conducted by CTS-México.

Metrobus is the "cornerstone of a strategy to transform mobility in the city, which for more than four decades has favored the use of private vehicles," the mayor said.

CTS-México yesterday delivered the results of the 5th Metrobus Opinion Survey during a forum, "Metrobus: Strategic Factors of Competitiveness," which was attended by high-level city officials. For the fifth consecutive year, Metrobus achieved positive user feedback. The system received a score of 8.0 across all categories, which Metrobus Director Guillermo Calderon called "very satisfactory," as it is the highest rating given to a means of transport.

CTS-México Director Adriana Lobo pointed out that 50,000 users of the two Metrobus lines own cars, but prefer to use the bus -- an indication of the transit system's success.

The survey of 2,575 people, conducted from June 8 to 13, found that the average age of Metrobus riders is 35 years old. Forty-eight percent of survey respondents are women and 70 percent are students and workers. The average household income of public transport users is 9,471 pesos. Ninety-two percent of riders say the buses are clean. Half of passengers say they are satisfied with the frequency of buses, but there is opportunity for improvement.

Mayor Ebrard said "this qualification requires us to continue providing this service and expand Metrobus."

Secretary of Transport and Highways (SETRAVI) Armando Quintero said the three lines of Metrobus addresses the mobility needs of passengers, including improved access for people with disabilities.

The presentation of the user survey results was attended by Adriana Lobo, Director of CTS-México; Guillermo Calderon, Director of Metrobus; Armando Quintero, Secretary of Transportation and Highways; Alejandro Calvillo, General Director of Consumer Power; and Tania Mijares, Coordinator of the Air and Energy Program for CEMDA. The event was moderated by Alejandro Villegas, Program Officer for the Environment of The William and Flora Hewlett Foundation.
