ISTANBUL - Metrobus, a public transit system in Istanbul, received the honorable mention award at the "Sustainable Transportation Awards 2009." The award, given each year to a city that has provided an innovative transportation strategy, is given by the Institute for Transportation and Development Policy, or ITDP.
(Honorable Mentions Include Beijing, Istanbul, Mexico City, Milan.) The Sustainable Transport Award is granted to cities for adopting innovative transportation strategies.
Istanbul is a city at a crossroads. Over the last half-century, Istanbul has undergone a tumultuous transition from an ancient metropolis to a sprawling megacity, growing from just over 1 million inhabitants in 1945 to an estimated 12 million today.

EMBARQ first introduced Istanbul officials to the concept of bus rapid transit in 2004, with hopes of improving mobility and accessibility on both sides of the Bosphorus.
With 64 million vehicles crossing it in 2005, the Bosphorus Bridge had become a major bottleneck for commuters traveling between Europe and Asia.
