A report released earlier this summer by released by EMBARQ—the World Resources Institute’s Center for Sustainable Transport—found that the US must achieve significant improvements in vehicle technology and reduce vehicle miles traveled (VMT) per capita to meet targeted reductions in oil consumption and greenhouse gases.

About 28 million commuters in cities including Bogotá, Mexico City and Jakarta rode B.R.T. lines every workday last year, according to Embarq, a global transport network at the World Resources Institute, an environmental research organization in Washington.

As pointed out by Adam Millard-Ball and Lee Schipper of Stanford University, auto ownership in the U.S. — indeed, in the developed world — may have reached stable levels.

Lee Schipper, Stanford University and the University of California, Berkeley:

One of EPA’s vital services is testing and certifying various products. When I started EMBARQ, the WRI Center for Sustainable Transport I was besieged by emails about snake-oil cures for engine emissions and poor fuel economy.

Made by EMBARQ, the World Resources Institute’s Center for Sustainable Transport, the video provides a heart-warming overview of the recent changes in New York that's made for better bike infrastructure, pleasant pedestrian plazas, and more efficient buses (via Grist).

"I have no doubts that the ridership will emerge to make everything pay," said Lee Schipper, a transportation expert at the University of California, Berkeley. "Particularly if problems maintaining or expanding the nation's highways and airports drive up the costs of using roads or air."
