Federal government officials, housing developers and members of civil society met in a forum that addressed the importance of sustainable housing as a way to improve quality of life and increase the competitiveness of Mexican cities.

The XXIII National Meeting was organized by the National Chamber of Industry Development and Promotion of Housing (CANADEVI). Director of CTS-México Adriana Lobo was invited to the event to explain the importance of transport as a strategic factor in quality of life issues, as well as climate change and the environment.

President of Mexico Felipe Calderón Hinojosa also emphasized the importance of the sustainable housing sector "to create well-planned urban environments that promote improved quality of life in the community."

The new chairman of the House, Ismael Plasencia Núñez, talked about breaking down public policies and other obstacles that inhibit comprehensive urban development. He said what works well to make cities more competitive is promoting comprehensive urban development, reviving housing construction, promoting the the most affordable and highest quality housing, and providing federal subsidies to lower income families.

In her lecture, "Mobility for Development and Climate Change," Ms. Lobo said Mexico should weigh quality of life as the most important element for urban competitiveness.

"In Mexico there are people who spend up to 30 percent of their salary on transportation," she said of the excessive cost of getting around the city. "This cost really competes with what Mexicans are investing in housing."

She added that housing developments should protect people, especially children, by providing safe roads.
