CTS-México to help implement new national vehicle fuel efficiency standards

The Center for Sustainable Transport in Mexico (CTS-México) won a grant worth 100,000 Euros from the Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Partnership (REEEP) to help implement new national vehicle fuel efficiency standards through the design a of a cap-and-trade market in Mexico, in partnership with Mexico's National Institute of Ecology (INE).
CTS-México estimates that, by 2030, such regulations could reduce up to 220 metric tons of carbon dioxide emissions and 8,300 tons of PM2.5 (particles less than 2.5 micrometers in diameter), as well as save 2.15 million Euros in the cost of fuel consumption.
CTS-México is putting together the team that will develop the architecture of the cap-and-trade market and will soon organize a scientific committee and workshop to improve the scope and quality of the project. CTS-México will work closely with INE's Environmental Economics and Public Policy Department to manage other project activities.
To win the grant from REEEP, CTS-México competed with 700 other proposals from around the world. Only 49 projects were selected for funding.
